The Attersee 6MWh
battery storage project, independently financed and developed by Expert Nöhmer
GmbH with SOLPRO GmbH as the EPC partner, has recently entered commercial
operation in Austria. It is the largest battery storage system of its kind in
Upper Austria, deploying four Dunext PowerMount-P700-1505kWh storage units with
a total capacity of 2.8 MW/6 MWh. With a total investment of approximately EUR
2.5 million, the project is expected to generate a projected annual return of
around 26%, with an estimated payback period of approximately 3.8 years.
Market Opportunity and
Project Background
Austria’s electricity
consumption is expected to double by 2040, driven by continued growth in
variable renewable energy capacity and increasing demand for flexible resources
capable of supporting grid balancing and frequency stability. Price volatility
in the day-ahead and intraday electricity markets creates opportunities for
energy arbitrage, while primary and secondary frequency regulation services
provide stable revenue streams. The ELWG grid-fee exemption policy further
reduces operating costs and helps shorten the payback period for storage
projects.
Against this backdrop,
Expert Nöhmer GmbH identified the commercial potential of standalone battery
storage as an investable asset class and decided to develop the project through
a privately financed model. Following a comprehensive evaluation of multiple
storage suppliers’ technical solutions, delivery capabilities, and service
systems, Dunext was selected as the storage system partner for the project. The
decision was driven by the differentiated advantages of the PowerMount
solution, including 400V low-voltage coupling, fast frequency-response
capability and cluster-level battery management, as well as Dunext’s deep understanding
of the requirements of the Austrian electricity market.
400V
Low‑Voltage Coupling for Lower CAPEX and Faster Delivery
The PowerMount system
is connected via a 400V low-voltage distribution at the transformer. The 400V
low-voltage distribution is already prepared for the future addition of up to 1
MW of EV charging infrastructure and up to 1 MWp of PV, allowing these systems
to be connected easily without requiring dedicated 690V or 800V infrastructure.
Since 400V is the industry standard for commercial and industrial facilities,
the platform provides a cost-effective, flexible, and future-proof solution for
evolving energy needs.
Fast PCS Response and
Cluster‑Level Management for Frequency Regulation
With a response time
of under 200 milliseconds, the Power Conversion System (“PCS”) delivers high‑precision
power control that accurately follows grid dispatch commands, meeting the
technical requirements of both primary and secondary frequency regulation
markets.
Cluster-level battery
management allows each battery cluster to be monitored and controlled
independently. In the event of a fault affecting a single cluster, the
remaining healthy clusters can continue operate, preventing a localized issue
from taking the entire system offline. This architecture
improves overall system availability, reduces unplanned downtime and helps
maximize revenue from grid services.
The project revenue is
derived from: energy arbitrage in the day-ahead and intraday markets, primary
and secondary frequency regulation service income, and cost savings from the
ELWG grid fee exemption. The combined effect of these revenue streams supports
the project’s expected 26% projected annual return and estimated 3.8‑year
payback period.
Full‑Lifecycle Service
Support Reducing Delivery and Operational Risk
Throughout project
execution, Dunext deployed four engineers to the site to support wiring
inspections, fault diagnosis and coordination with the third-party Energy
Management System provider. This close on-site collaboration helped ensure that
the system was commissioned and connected to the grid in line with the
customer’s operational requirements.
The after‑sales
service framework includes: 30‑minute hotline response, on‑site engineer
dispatch within 48 hours in key markets, spare parts availability, and annual
inspection and preventive maintenance visits, covering the full project
lifecycle from solution design and grid connection commissioning to long‑term
operations and maintenance.
From Project Delivery
to Long-Term Market Value
The Attersee project
represents a flagship application of Dunext PowerMount in the European
frequency regulation market. It also provides a practical example of how
standalone battery storage can be developed as a bankable and
revenue-generating asset. The successful commissioning of
this project demonstrates Dunext’s ability to deliver advanced energy storage
solutions and provide responsive, localized service support in the European
market.
